Sick and Pregnant

February 13, 2008

Nothing like being sick and pregnant… Guess it’s better than sick and tired of BEING pregnant, which I’m certainly not (yet). I guess I was due, as I haven’t been sick in over a year, but I’ve been sick for the past week with a nasty cold. I’m sure the baby really appreciated all the coughing, but *finally* I’m feeling better. Everything’s going well with the pregnancy. I passed my glucose screening a few weeks ago, and now I’m just anticipating the group b strep check I have in 4 weeks. We have our last Bradley class tomorrow, will have the hospital tour next weekend, and then the breastfeeding class on March 3rd. Things are falling into place!

The baby shower in Ohio last weekend went well. It was small, with just family attending which was nice, and my mom and sister were amazing and got us the car seat and cloth diapers we needed! BUT, the best part of the shower?

Shower Cake
The cake. I’m not a big cake fan, but mmmmmm…. from my favorite bakery of all time now called Ele Cake Company (was Woody’s baker in West Carrollton, then A Taste of Elegance in Miamisburg and now they’ve moved back to the former Woody’s location and are called Ele Cake Company). Sure, I gained 4 pounds in two weeks, which I largely attribute to the four pieces of cake I had last weekend (and the delicious Mexican food, Donatos pizza and the lunch buffet at Amar India), but it was worth it… drool… Here are the rest of the pictures from my shower in Ohio if you’re interested.

I’ve been working this past week on freezing a few meals before the baby gets here, so hopefully we’ll have a nicely stocked freezer come April. So far, I’ve frozen stuffed green peppers plus an extra bag of filling for another batch, 2 packages of cooked ground turkey to throw into spaghetti, a few cooked chicken breasts, and am planning on freezing a spinach pie and a broccoli quiche today. Also planned are more cooked ground turkey, sloppy joe filling, lasagna, turkey meatloaf, stroganoff casserole and shepherd’s pie. I found this site to be a great resource.

I even managed to get some knitting done. See?

Here they are finished, hanging out in the new car seat:

Shorties using the Picky Pants pattern, which Mountain Colors Twizzle. They’re a little floppy feeling, due to the silk content, I’m sure, but oh so yummy.
Shorties
And once I cast off for those, I immediately cast on for another pair out of my Purewool that arrived. It’s the Grove colorway, and I love the way they turned out. I will definitely have to jump on another Purewool co-op, soon!

And, I also decided to knit up a Baby Surprise out of purewool, as well. Here is where I’m at so far:
Baby Surprise Jacket
Not too exciting to look at so far, but I’m about halfway through the pattern. Not sure how I feel about it yet, but I’m trying to get a size that the baby could wear at a year, since it’s not too cold here until pretty late in the season. We’ll see how it shapes up!

So far I’m really liking Lost this season… but Survivor, I’m not too sure about.

If you haven’t signed up for Paypal’s competition yet, leave a comment and I’ll refer you and you get $25 to spend (or deposit into your bank account) for free! :) You can only get the free $25 for the next two weeks though, so sign up now. Best of all, if you sell on Ebay or somewhere else, they don’t charge you fees to accept payments like paypal does.

Is everyone as excited as I am about Lost tonight? With this stupid writer’s strike I’m sick of Tivo only recording old episodes of Law & Order (which Jason has given the “thumbs up” to). Too bad I won’t be able to watch it until next Tuesday though! We have our Bradley class tonight, and I leave tomorrow morning until Monday for Ohio. My mom and sister are throwing me a small baby shower. Unless something unexpected arises, this will be my last trip until the baby is born!

I mentioned last post about knitting a pair of longies for the baby. Well, here they are:
Picky Pants longies
I don’t like how the Paton’s Classic Merino pooled and then striped for the legs, but oh well. They were a good practice pair.

I’ve since finished another pair in newborn size
NB Picky Pants
I used Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted and really like how they turned out.

You can see we’re getting ready for baby’s arrival, too. That’s the co-sleeper my mom gave us at the shower last weekend, and I set it up the other day to see if we need to buy the leg extenders or not (we do). I wouldn’t say I’ve really started nesting yet (although I did just decide to wash the shower curtain this morning… does that count?), but it makes me feel relieved to know the baby will have somewhere to sleep! I do have lists everywhere though… of meals I want to freeze (spinach pie, lasagna, quiche– please baby don’t be lactose intolerant!), of things to pack in my hospital bag, of things we need to do (schedule an appointment with a ped, tour the hospital, etc), things we definitely need to purchase before baby arrives (a car seat, nursing bra and tanks, etc). Pretty soon I’m going to need a list of my lists just so I can keep it all sorted! LOL

Next on the needles? A pair of shorties from the Picky Pants pattern:
New pair of shorties
I’m using Mountain Colors Twizzle. I don’t know if wool/silk is a good choice for shorties or not, but they sure sound decadent to me and the yarn is so yummy. I’m currently waiting on a co-op order of Purewool, which I can’t wait to knit longies and shorties from!

Been knitting lately.  Details to come.

Belated Birthday Present

July 13, 2007

Imagine my surprise when I opened my mailbox yesterday and saw an envelope from Canada. Now I haven’t ordered yarn in ages, so I know it couldn’t be an order from anyplace… Even though I sometimes suffer from a tad of yarn-buying amnesia, I knew that wasn’t the case this time, as certainly I would have remembered ordering from out of the country!  After seeing who it was from, I was so befuddled I promptly dropped it in the dog’s water dish. Shouting f*ck and scaring the pee out of the dog, I immediately pulled it out and ripped it open.

RAOK from Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (Yarn Harlot)

Fantastic summer sock yarn! Can you see who it’s from? The Yarn Harlot herself, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee. I feel so special :) She writes in her note, that she had some “extra sock yarn.” Um… who has extra sock yarn? Is it possible to have “extra” sock yarn? From the woman with a house of wool, I think she’s fibbing a bit… but I certainly appreciate her “extra yarn” even if I don’t believe it :)

In knitting news, I did something crazy and cast on for a pattern the day it was available. Boogie’s Sprout pattern just called out to me, and made me cast on.

Sprout sleeve
I even had to be completely unimaginative and cast on in close to the same color of yarn. Can I help it if I *love* that bright spring green color? Just a start of a sleeve, but I’m knitting again! I’m using my new Cotton Ease. My idea was that this would be the perfect San Francisco sweater. However, we leave a week from today. I think in this case, I was very imaginative…

But speaking of San Francisco (and Sonoma and Yosemite), I’m so excited for our trip! I’ve already started pre-packing. Am I the only one that does this? I set aside things that I must bring with me. I already have yarn picked out for a pair of vacation socks (using this Panda Cotton), have decided which embroidery project to bring for when I don’t feel like knitting (Sublime Stiching’s Winterland on a kitchen towel), have my swimsuits and a few clothing items all set aside to go in the suitcase, and have started planning my snack for the flight. I also make lists like crazy of things to purchase, as well as things I can’t remember to pack. I’m a huge list-maker. The trouble is, I make lists constantly and then end up losing the list. I already have my list made up of wineries to visit, and our day in Yosemite is all planned out, plus I have my list of must-see San Francisco sites. Just writing this blog-post, I’ve already thought of a few things to add to my must-bring list (camera charger, corkscrew, cool wine vacuum-y thing we have, etc).

In tv news, anyone else think Big Brother 8 is kind of blah? I’m loving Hell’s Kitchen, on the other hand. I’m rooting for Julia, the Waffle House short-order cook. Nothing else excites me on tv, and in fact my Tivo is pretty much empty except for my guilty pleasure, (whispers) Y&R. Say something about it, I dare you! My mom used to watch this when I was a kid, and I, of course watched right along with her when I was home sick from school, or on the occasional rainy summer day when my My Little Ponies or Matchbox cars weren’t interesting me.

Chevron Scarf

I just couldn’t resist casting on for the Chevron scarf from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. Isn’t it beautimous? I’m using Claudia Handpaints in Spring Break and Caribbean Blue. I love how easy the pattern was to memorize ~ this is a great one to knit while watching the new summer programs ~ Hell’s Kitchen, Food Network Star, Top Chef… all these cooking reality shows make me hungry! I’m also waiting in anticipation for Big Brother to begin, as well.

Thank You SP!

L&V Secret Pal Package!
I feel so spoiled! She already sent me a gift certificate to The Loopy Ewe (which I promptly spent on 2 skeins pictured farther down in this blog entry), and now this great package! I can’t wait to drink the coffee ~ YUM! and the dark chocolate pistachio toffee pieces look *delicious.* And the yarn! Fabulous :) A big thank you to Michelle for a wonderful package.

And a closeup of the adorable stitch markers she sent:

I mentioned yesterday about my recent sock yarn buying frenzy. Here’s what I’ve been buying:

Have you been watching Lost?? This week’s episode was an awesome one! I KNEW Juliet was a liar, I just knew it! I can’t wait to re-watch this one after Jason gets back from his business trip. I always watch them twice, I’m such a Lost-freak! I watch it the first time, usually on Thursday night since it’s on so late, Then I listen to the podcasts, and get the easter eggs, then watch again to find the references.

Pinwheel

Here’s the progress on my pinwheel. Actually, I’m a tad farther now. I knit 8 rows of the dark blue and then switched back to the lighter blue and am going to do a few purl rows. Now I just need to figure out how many purl rows I need to do to prevent curling…

Lost update- It’s getting better and better! I can’t WAIT for next week’s episode already. This season, especially after the winter break they did is fantastic.
To the person who searched to find my blog with the words “horrid temp job” I’m sorry– I’ve definitely been there!
To the person who searched “chucks blue” did you mean Converse All-Stars chucks? Man I loved those shoes. I had two low top pair–one in black and another in burghundy and I wore both pair completely out. I duct taped them up (for decoration, not function) and wrote all over them. Sigh. Those wonderful days of youth. LOL
If you didn’t mean Converse All Star chucks, then you may need to see a doctor if you’re “chucking blue.” Ick.

Thanks L&V sp for the postcard! I definitely needed a little cheer in my mailbox yesterday, and your postcard brightened my day :)

Not much to say

March 9, 2007

but I just wanted to post and mention that Lost this week (I just watched it last night) was REALLY good!  So if you’d previously abandoned the show, you just might want to start watching it again.  You can even catch up on ABC’s website :)
