The Family Building Act of 2007 will be submitted next week for consideration by Congress. The legislation will mandate insurance coverage for fertility treatment.

It is critical that we get behind this legislation to ensure its passage.

You can also write to your representative (find yours here), and can use this template letter, if you like:

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to request that you sponsor legislation that would require insurance companies to provide coverage for infertility treatment, similar to H.R. 735, The Family Building Act, introduced by Representative Anthony Weiner.

Infertility is a medically recognized disease that affects men and women equally. Still, many insurance companies do not provide coverage for treatment to overcome this disease, but single out infertility for exclusion. I find this to be discriminatory. Well-managed insurance coverage will not place a large burden on insurance companies. Studies have shown that infertility coverage may actually reduce costs by limiting costly treatments that have low rates of success in treating the underlying problem.

In fact, a recent employer survey conducted by the consulting firm William M. Mercer found that 91 percent of respondents offering infertility treatment have not experienced an increase in their medical costs as a result of providing this coverage.

Insurers argue that bearing children is a lifestyle choice. In fact it is. But it is not a choice to have a disease that prevents a person from having the option to bear children. Insurers raise concerns about some treatments and the possibility of multiple births and the associated costs. Reproductive doctors are careful to help couples minimize the risks associated with multiple births. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (Aug 29, 2002) concludes that the incidence of multiple births is actually lower in states that have enacted an infertility insurance requirement than in states without coverage. Why? Because couples with insurance coverage are free to make purely medical decisions when pursuing some infertility treatments, as opposed to other couples who must also weigh financial considerations that often result in medical risk taking, multiple births and a high rate of complications during and post-pregnancy.

In 1998, the United States Supreme Court ruled that reproduction is a major life activity under the “Americans with Disabilities Act.” This ruling demonstrates the importance of reproduction and the impact that infertility, in which the ability to reproduce is impaired, has on the lives of men and women.

Many affected by infertility do not feel comfortable speaking publicly about this very private struggle, but we represent all racial, religious, and ethnic groups, as well as both sexes. We are neighbors, co-workers, friends and relatives, and we just want to experience the joy of raising families without having to bankrupt ourselves in the process. Please support infertility coverage legislation and help fulfill the dreams of thousands of couples waiting for a family to love.

Sincerely,

 Laying Low

I’ve been laying low for a few days. Obviously, I suppose, since I haven’t posted in a while, right? But, I’m feeling better, and getting geared up for this month of fertility treatments. With the injectables, this month got moving fast, so we’re already having our IUIs done this weekend. It’s the same procedure we had last month, so this will be round 2. I know I’ve kept that kind of a secret, but I’m tired of keeping secrets at this point. Besides, so many people deal with infertility and don’t talk about it like it’s something they’re ashamed of, and that’s sad. The public needs to know about it, plain and simple.

ANYWAY, I haven’t been knitting too much lately, but I am on the gusset of my Glacier socks. I took a time out to knit up two baby hats for someone who just had twins. Still haven’t caught Lost from this week, although I thought last week’s episode wasn’t as great as the previous few weeks. I think I just don’t like Desmond as much as the other characters.

Not a Good Day

April 17, 2007

I’m not having such a great day. It’s pretty bad when it’s only 6:36 am and you already declare it a bad day. It looks like this month is a failure for getting pregnant yet again. That means no baby in 2007. And another year goes by. I’ll be doing injectables this next month, which means giving myself a shot every day for a week or so. Fun. Women do crazy things to get pregnant, and I’m certainly proof of that. To top it all off, and rub in the fact that I’m a failure, there were TWO pregnancy announcements at my office yesterday. Not a happy day, week OR month for me.

I do have fun pictures though. I finished my Speed Demon socks:
Speed Demon Socks
Just your basic sock “pattern.”

I also bought a skein of yarn from the new seller Woolgirl.
Happy Fuzzy Yarn
See the itty bitty sheepy stitch marker there? She included that for free along with a hand written thank you note. I *love* when sellers add little freebies to the order. Sheri of the Loopy Ewe does it, and I can never wait to open her packages to find out what little goodie was included. So I highly recommend shopping at Woolgirl ~ my order was packaged beautifully, the yarn is gorgeous, and she included a little freebie :)
Anyway, hope your Tuesday’s better than mine.

Standstill

April 12, 2007

My Horcrux socks are at a stand still. I love the yarn, I love the pattern, but last week was so stressful that I made quite a few mistakes. The last straw was when I realized I knit the gussett too far and now I’m going to have to rip back. I reallllly don’t feel up to that, so I did what I never do. I cast on for another pair.
Speed Demon Sock
I’m using Sweet Georgia Speed Demon Sock in English Bay. Yes, the currently on hiatus dyer. And of course, I love love love the yarn. Oh well, I’ve purchased enough sock yarn lately to tide me over….

You heard that right ~ I’ve been buying sock yarn. So I officially consider myself out of the Stashalong. Look out for pics sometime soon of my stash enhancement ~ it’s yummy. I could almost single handedly blame The Loopy Ewe ~ only 2 more orders until I’m a Loopy Groupie! And I hadn’t even ordered from her prior to a month ago.

In addition to yarn, I also bought myself a little toy recently, after reading about it on someone’s blog (sorry I don’t remember who’s!).
Unazukin
It’s an Unazukin, and it’s adorable! When you ask it a question, it either shakes its head no, or nods its head yes. I bought it from J-List, and it arrived quickly all the way from Japan in perfect condition. They have lots of Japanese goodies, including other types of toys… teehee and TONS of Hello Kitty stuff.

On the TTC front, I’m just playing the monthly waiting game. I really hate this time of the month as I always seem to get my hopes up, and then I’m devastated. Sigh. Infertility sucks.

Baby FOs (not for me)

I finished a few baby FOs, but don’t get excited, I’m not pregnant. The first two are for my co-worker’s baby shower which was this past week. Click on the pics to see all the specs.

Here’s the matching socks:
Baby Socks

And this one is sort of for me– I finished the baby pinwheel blanket for my hope chest. Hopefully I’ll have a little one to give it so use someday soon.
Finished Pinwheel

They all use cotton ease– I love cotton ease! In fact, I started a Cotton Ease group on flickr, if you share my love of cotton ease and want to pool your pics. I just heard that Michael’s is now carrying the new colors of cotton ease, and I can’t wait to see them in person and see FOs of people who’ve used them!

Other exciting news in the plath house– we just leased a brand new Jeep. We’re a Jeep family– I drive a Jeep Wrangler, dh drives a Cherokee (although we just sold it), and now we have this:
New Jeep
It’s a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and I love it already! It’s been so long since we’ve had something new (both our vehicles were bought used), and it’s so nice to have a little luxury, even if it is leased. :) It has heated seats, a moonroof and remote start. I feel so spoiled! AND we’re actually saving money per month since we just paid off my Jeep.

In fertility news, we had our follow-up appointment at the RE and I was diagnosed with PCOS, so I’ve started taking a medication to control my insulin and hopefully help to shrink my cysts. All our other tests came back normal, so hopefully we can get started on our path. We’re taking a pretty aggressive approach this next month– I’ll be on clomid again, and we’re doing some other things as well. Wish us luck :)

Drop out

March 13, 2007

I feel like a loser.  So excited for Sock Madness, I immediately cast on my socks after downloading the pattern Saturday morning.   I got into the first repeat and just thought ick.  My sock looked like a bad bad bad 80s sweater.  Picture one of Cliff Huxtable’s sweaters– tan with orange and blue.  I couldn’t even bring myself to take a picture, it was that bad.  Trust me, you don’t want to see this monstrosity.  What was I thinking?  Well, I don’t have many solids– only boring boy colors (grey, tan), and I couldn’t justify buying yarn (my Stashalong commitment).  I also just really don’t like mixing two different yarns unless it’s for a heel/toe contrast.  Sigh.  So I’ve conceded.  I’m a dropout.

I have been knitting a bit on my secret project.  I guess I’m ready to talk about it.  It’s my hope chest project– a pinwheel baby blanket out of Cotton Ease.  (You can see some really pretty ones here.)  I’m trying to stay positive, and although some may say it’s bad luck to knit for a baby not yet conceived, I find it helps to keep me thinking positively.  I treat it as my daily meditation and mantra in positive thinking. I’ve already knit a pair of baby socks, as well as two little sweaters and a hat and socks set when I was pregnant before, so I’m just adding to my hope chest. After all, we ARE going to have a baby (see, positive thinking). Sometime. And I may just have an entire chest full of clothes and blankets for whenever he or she arrives, and that’s ok.

Finished Classy Slip Ups

Finished Classy Slip Ups!

And they are finished! Click on the picture for all the details. I experienced a little drama (see below), but they are finished, and all ready to gift this Christmas. I’m so excited to have a gift already lined up for Christmas; now I just have to hold myself back from giving them to the recipient for her birthday.

My drama: in my fiendish knitting over the past few days, while knitting in bed, I reached back (knitting needle in hand) to reposition myself and CRUNCH.
Crunch

Broken needle. Luckily I had a size 1 metal dpn to finish the socks with, but oh how I hate metal dpns! I know people rave and rave about addis and the Knitpicks Options needles, but no no no metal needles for me. Ick! I would prefer plastic over metal any day! (but really I like bamboo the best)

Speaking of metal dpns, I just so happen to be knitting with some metal dpns right now in size 8 (I don’t have bamboo in that size) and I’m hating it! It’s a project I can’t share about yet, so no pics, but I feel like I’m going to lose my stitches everytime I move, and I’m compensating by knitting too tightly. I guess I need to get some bamboo dpns in the middle sizes. All I have are sock sizes, and then a 10 1/2 for felting.

In case you were wondering (I know you probably weren’t, but anyway), the HSG went fine. There were no blockages, and it wasn’t as awful as I expected it to be.

Get ready, Sock Madness starts Saturday!!

Classy Slip Ups

One sock finished. I’m feeling kind of lazy today; don’t even want to pick up the knitting.
Just sitting here watching Leave it to Beaver and the food channel on tv. If there’s nothing else on tv (like the weekend), the food channel is always enjoyable, except it makes me hungry. But at least I’m caught up on laundry and dishes, so I feel as though I’ve accomplished *something* this weekend. I have my HSG tomorrow, and I’m not looking forward to it :(

For lack of anything else extraordinary to say, here’s a few cutie pics of Patches:
