A Thrift Store Find and a Canning Jar Tip

Canning my tomatoes without seeds and skins should be easier next year. I found this victorio strainer at the thrift store for $7 over the weekend!

I about peed my pants with excitement when I saw the box on the shelf!

And speaking of canning, did you know that a parmesan cheese lid fits a regular mouth canning jar perfectly? Not that I buy canned parmesan cheese…

This will be perfect for those spices that I tend to use liberally like granulated garlic or to store bread crumbs.

I love the Victorio strainer! We use ours every year to make apple sauce and apple butter. Everyone who sees it in action wants one because it’s so much easier than food mills, and is larger than similar attachments to the stand mixers so we don’t have to quarter the apples before putting them in.

Thanks for the tip on the parmesan cheese lid. Now I just have to get one of those because I never buy pregrated parmesan.

Really cool idea but where do you get them?

You got a great deal on that food mill, Lisa! I use the Oxo food mill which operates slightly differently. I use it to make applesauce from home grown apples. Just quarter whole apples, boil them soft, and the food mill takes out all the seeds and skins. Run the sauce through a blender, add sugar and cinnamon, and boil down to make apple butter.
