Christmas

December 29, 2008

Sigh. Christmas is over, and the family has gone back to their respective states. It was so nice to have everyone come down to see us this year, but Eleanore is already going through withdrawal. She loves having a full house of relatives to climb on and smile at. She was, however, pretty overwhelmed and cranky on Christmas day. She didn’t want to open any of her gifts if she wasn’t allowed to chew on the wrapping paper and tissue. The fact that she was spoiled with lots of gifts from the family, made opening them a long ordeal that was interrupted by many nursing sessions and a few naps.

We made it through though.
So far, her favorite gifts were these two:

a set of these blocks and the red ball I knit her. She also really liked the rainbow stacker Aunt Becca got her and a music cube from Uncle Jarod. Overall, my family did wonderful getting her natural toys that can be played with, and not overly plasticized toys that do the thinking for you ;) We all appreciate that!

I received some wonderful gifts, too. Most notably the beautiful paintings Jason bought me.

He bought them off the wall of our favorite local coffee shop, Three Goats.
I also received some Noro sock yarn that I can’t wait to work with:

Between the cooking and watching Ellie pull up on and get into everything, I didn’t get much knitting done over the holiday, but I’m still working on her longies.

I’ve been splitting my free time between my new book series, the Sookie Stackhouse set, aka the True Blood series and knitting. I’ve already finished the first book in the series, Dead Until Dark, and have started the second, Living Dead in Dallas . If you’re a fan of the Twilight series, these are quite a bit different ~ they’re mysteries, but they’re still intriguing, quick reads, which I enjoy. I’ve not watched True Blood on HBO, but I’m looking forward to its release on DVD.

2008 Ornaments

December 22, 2008

I managed to finish my ornaments for 2008.

After I finished with the stitchette, I figured I had the time and motivation for another quick embroidery project, so I made a quick snowflake.

No other crafting progress to speak of. I set aside Riverstone for now, and am absent mindedly working on a pair of longies out of peace fleece for Eleanore. They will make a nice mindless project to work on over the holiday family visiting, wine drinking and face stuffing that is sure to ensue.

Eleanore must be excited for Santa’s arrival because she hasn’t been sleeping well the past few nights. Last night she thought it was playtime at 3 am. Apparently crawling around the bed and head butting mama is more fun than sleeping. I hope my family is able to wear her out when they visit so we can all get some sleep! My parents and brother arrive tomorrow, and my sister and her husband will be here Wednesday. I can’t believe Christmas is Thursday! I do have all the shopping done, except one more trip to the grocery, but I still have quite a bit of wrapping to do, and fudge to be made. Everything finally feels like it is coming together though.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas!

Only a week left

December 18, 2008

until the big day. Crazy isn’t it? We finally got our tree decorated this week, and I have found more Christmas craft projects to work on. I seem to be avoiding the Riverstone sweater, but that’s fine because I held it up to Ellie, and it’s going to fit her for a long time. It’s huge! She’s wearing 12 and 18 month clothes right now, so I decided to knit the 2T size, which may not have been such a wise choice. Ah well.

I finished the Santa Hat and think it turned out nicely. It should fit for a long time as well. No modeled pictures though, as I’m going to tuck it into Eleanore’s stocking on Christmas morning.

After taking an inventory of all our ornaments, I realized that I hadn’t made a new ornament for this year as I have the past few years, so I decided to embroider one of my winter stitchettes patterns and will sew it into an ornament.

I’m always so inspired by Hillary Lang’s projects. Her vintage book collection sparks so much jealousy!

One tradition I started a few years ago was to purchase an ornament when we went on vacation. It’s nice because we get to think back to the trip when we hang the ornament. This is the one we got last July on our trip to San Francisco. I was pregnant with Eleanore, but didn’t know it at the time.

Purchased last month on our trip to St. Pete Beach:

Here’s a wooden one that I bought at Maple Landmark. Their wooden toys are beautiful as well, and I bought Ellie a push car from them for Christmas. I’m really impressed with the quality, and I love that they’re made in Vermont (not China!). I may have to buy one of their solace ornaments next year.

Speaking of ornaments, I purged quite a few this year. I’ve decided there’s no sense in keeping ones I don’t really like anymore, and I want to focus on keeping them meaningful. Our tree is now mostly full of glass or handmade ornaments, plus a few special ones from childhood, like Jason’s train ornaments and the ornaments from our travels.

Down to the wire…

December 16, 2008

I happened to glance at the calendar yesterday and panicked when I realized Christmas is NEXT week. Oh no. We have family coming in next Tuesday and Wednesday and my house is in shambles. Not to mention there’s food shopping to be done and knitting to complete. I’ve given up on gift knitting except for a few things for Eleanore.

So close to Christmas and yet I seem to be pattern hopping. I was thinking about buying Eleanore a santa hat, but Jason had the idea that I should knit one for her instead, so I immediately felt the need to cast on. After all, she’ll need the santa hat on Christmas, and not necessarily the sweater so soon. I’m pretty much writing the pattern as I go along, using 88 stitches. I want it to have room to grow so she can wear it again next year.

I’m not sure how I feel about the Riverstone sweater. I’m almost finished though, so I may as well complete it. It seems a little… off to me. I’m thinking a good blocking will change it’s appearance nicely though.

Remember my last post, where I mentioned that Eleanore wants nothing to do with solids? Well, overnight it seems she decided she enjoys food. She ate an entire ice cube of carrots and another of sweet potatoes yesterday. I was shocked!

She’s growing up so fast. Crawling and getting into everything, and she started a little bit of cruising along the coffee table the past few days, too! I can’t believe she’s already eight and half months old.

Rainy Day

December 11, 2008

It’s patterns like this gnome that make me wish I could crochet.

Not looking much like Christmas today. It’s 60 degrees and pouring rain. I think we might stay in and craft today, if I can get the crazy crawler to stay occupied. I can’t wait until she’s big enough to craft with me on rainy days.

Holiday Happenings

December 8, 2008

Our trip to St. Pete Beach was great. It was a little cool for Florida, but we couldn’t complain much, as it was still in the upper 60s, lower 70s for most of the four days we were there. It only rained once, and that allowed me time to stop in a LYS, Needles and Knobs. It’s a small shop, but I did manage to find some Colinette Jitterbug to add to my stash. No pics, but I got Kingfisher.

Ellie had her first swing ride while we were at our favorite beach, North Beach at Ft. Desoto.

She also got to experience sand for the first time. She was a little confused by it’s ability to look solid, and then just crumble in her hand.
IMG_3449
She also found that she quite liked the taste of it. Once she realized that, I had to put the camera down, so I don’t have any pictures of her trying to eat fistfuls of it. For a little girl who has no interest in solid food at all, she sure took to the taste of sand.

We made all our usual stops in Florida, staying at the Tradewinds Sandpiper, and making sure to eat at Ted Peters, a dive we found a few years ago before it was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

Thanksgiving was nice, but uneventful. Since we drove home from Florida on Wednesday, we waited until Saturday to fix our big dinner. It was quiet without family around, but we still had our own little celebration. Eleanore wanted nothing to do with the mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes I made for her (sans milk and butter of course). Everything that went in, promptly came back out again.
First Thanksgiving
We’re still trying every so often (and we’ve tried pretty much everything imaginable except sand), but so far, she’s strictly a mamas milk kind of girl.

Yesterday we headed up to Boone, NC in the mountains to cut our Christmas tree. Coming from Michigan, where we were surrounded by Christmas tree farms, it was a little strange having to drive two hours to get the tree, but it was nice. Boone is a gorgeous town, and the mountains were breathtaking from the farm we chose. We stopped at Ewing’s Fraser Fir Farm, and were pleased with our choice. It was a family owned farm, and they were super-nice and the trees were beautiful. They had so many to choose from. It was very cold though, so we tried to make our decision somewhat quickly. Eleanore didn’t seem to care for the temperature.

The view was amazing though.

On the needles? Still working on Eleanore’s Christmas sweater, using the Riverstone pattern. I also knit up a very quick stocking stuffer, using the Oh Balls pattern. I love the way it worked up with no seaming.
